What Hiring Managers Want to Hear from Candidates in a Phone Interview

What Hiring Managers Want to Hear from Candidates in a Phone InterviewWhat Hiring Managers Want to Hear from Candidates in a Phone Interview Companies are increasingly choosing to use a phone interview at the early stages of kontrolle candidates, before inviting them on-site for in-person interviews. This is a way to efficiently screen through large candidate pools, as the average job has over 250 applicants. Moreover, the phone screen is typically conducted by recruiters, many of whom may be remote so the phone-screen is a good medium to tap into remote talent and reduce the recruiting overhead for the hiring manager. The recruiter has three main goals for a phone interviewHiring managers have a limited amount of time, and a recruiters first filter is to make sure they are passing along candidates that are truly interested in the role. We are in the era where recruiters reach out to candidates more often than the other way around, and often prospective candidates wi ll take a phone screen just to get interview practice and see what the market is willing to pay. As such, recruiters use the phone interview to ensure you have a genuine interest in the company and the role.A recruiter will notlage typically conduct a deep-dive on each of your core skills , but rather, they want to make sure you have general experience in the core requirements of the job. For example, if you are interviewing to be a digital absatzwirtschaft manager they are less likely to get into the specifics of how you measure the success of a marketing campaign, but they will want to ensure you have indeed run marketing campaigns of similar size and scope as theirs. This is more of a checklist approach rather than grading your skills in each category.Behavioral interviewing is how most companies comprehensively assess culture fit in later rounds. However, the phone interview is also meant to do a preliminary check on how well suited you are to the companys culture. Key areas of interest for the recruiter is whether you have worked in similar environments (e.g., pace of work, level of collaboration), your overall demeanor (e.g., level of humility), and your mindset (e.g., growth orientation).During a phone interview, it is easy for the interviewer to get distracted (e.g., check email). This makes it even more important to be succinct and compelling to ensure you capture their attention. This can be applied to the first question the recruiter will ask - Tell me about yourself. Many candidates ramble and spend too much time on unimportant details, and miss out on highlighting the core aspects of their candidacy. A practical way to solve this and demonstrate synthesis is to focus on the themes of your career progression. For example, you might describe your career in three stages - your first role, your ascension into leadership roles and your current job, instead of reciting everything on your resume. You can also describe your career by functional the mes, especially when your career has breadth and a non-linear path. For example, you might frame your career as being a mix of bringing new products to market, developing and coaching teams, and partnering with cross-functional stakeholders. As mentioned earlier, often the recruiter has reached out to you, and it is important to show you are not passively taking a call, but rather have clear interest in the role. This is why it is important to do your research on the company to understand them more deeply, and then weave that into why it fits with the career path you are charting. Specifically, you should have clarity on their mission, their ecosystem (e.g., customer segments, key competitors) and their products/services. Ideally, in your research, you will find something that truly connects with your experience and/or professional interests and speaking to that will show a deep interest in the opportunity.A common mistake candidates make is not recreating the environment that br ings out their best, professional self. Often candidates will take a call from home, while reclining on their couch, and this casual attitude shows up in their communication style, dimming their professional energy.Given this, it is important to find an environment that can simulate a professional aura (e.g., a home office, in front of a desk), and dress accordingly as your communication style will be more polished as your brain picks up on the subtle cues. The right posture will also ensure your voice projects well, as opposed to reclining on your couch and sounding muffled. The questions you ask towards the end of the phone interview serve as an indicator of what is important to you in the opportunity so avoid administrative questions such as vacation policy. Instead, focus on high-value questions that show you are thinking about things that really matter such as What does success in the role look like? These questions will also better prepare you to engage on a deeper level in t he following rounds, especially when speaking with the hiring manager. Some candidates use phone screens as an opportunity to script their answers and read them aber sicher for word. This takes away from having an authentic conversation , and most interviewers can sense when you are reciting from a script. Instead, you can have a few bullet points written out that you want to make sure you cover in the conversation and also have your resume handy so you can speak to specifics when asked.Jeevan is the Founder and CEO of Rocket Interview ( www.rocketinterview.com ) where his team helps job seekers ace the most competitive interviews. Maximize Your Workweek by Retiring Hump Day

Maximize Your Workweek by Retiring Hump DayMaximize Your Workweek by Retiring Hump DayStop visualizing your workweeks as a series of grueling climbs, and Wednesday will become more than just a tipping point toward the weekend. The concept of hump day has had a long history too long, in fact. For many years employees and managers alike have talked about the importance of getting through hump day (aka Wednesday) and making it to the weekend. Unfortunately, hump day is a career killer.Hump-day employees look at every week as the process of starting at the bottom of the hill on Monday morning at 8 a.m., climbing to the top by Wednesday at noon, and then coasting down to the bottom of the hill by 5 oclock on Friday. These people havent gotten anywhere during the course of the week. They are back where they started on Monday morning, week after week after week.Imagine a college athlete who performs exactly the same way at the beginning of every season. Those kinds of players never get off t he bench, assuming they can even keep their spot on the bench. Intuitively, we know we must continually improve if we want to take our careers to the next level. With a hump-day approach to the workweek, we sabotage productivity and psychologically set ourselves up for a mediocre week and a mediocre career.Study Warren Buffett, Steve Jobs, Oprah Winfrey and a host of other great achievers. They didnt push forward for 52 working hours and then slump backward for another 52. They raised their bar of achievement, and then set the bar higher again and again.Instead of working for the weekend, try filling out a Leap-Day Worksheet at noon Wednesday. (Maximum time investment 35 minutes.)1. Make a list of the meetings/activities/events that have occurred so far this week.2. For each entry in Step One, answer unterstellung five questions in less than five minutes a. What did I do that was effective?b. What did I do that was not effective?c. What could I have done to be more effective?d. What did I learn from this experience?e. How can I use what I learned to perform at a higher level for the remainder of this week? From now on, make Wednesday at noon your weekly inflection point to capture key lessons and catapult to a higher level of performance over the remainder of the week. After all, the greatest performers in history didnt rise briefly and then fall backward. They leapt forward to higher and higher levels of achievement, and hit repeat.

The active mindset A sure way to avoid being bored with life

The active mindset A sure way to avoid being bored with lifeThe active mindset A sure way to avoid being bored with lifeIm bored. Whens the last time you said that? I bet elend too long ago.If you give me 4 minutes, Ill tell you why thats a bad sign.In the past, I always looked at other people for answers. When youre little, your school teachers tell you what to do every day. Thats the ordnungsprinzip at primary school, high school, college, and university. Its always one person who tells a group what to do. What does that do to people?School systems train us to be passive. And after we get out of school, nothing really changes. When I had my first job, I listened to my boss about what to do.And when I started my first business with my dad, I looked at him for answers. Now, you might think that this is a matter of experience. Thats the most obvious idea. We thinkWhen Im junior, I take orders. When Im senior, I give orders.Thats about the worst mindset you can have because its too passi ve. Instead, its much mora beneficial for our career to adopt an active mindset.Whats the difference between a passive and active mindset? And how do we even form an active mindset? I have a three-step-process that Ive used to transform my own mindset. Feel free to use it too.Step 1 Acknowledge that passivity is badSo when I talk about being bored, Im not talking about being bored in a good way. Sometimes the best ideas come to us when were fully relaxed. Thats good. For the sake of this article, Im talking about when we say Im bored in anI have no idea what Im doingtype of way.Do you recognize that feeling? Its a sense of aimlessness. Now, to a degree,no one knows what they are doing. The difference is that when youre always bored with life, youre nottrying. And people who dont try are losers. You know why? Life is fascinating - but you musttryto experience it.Theres nothing cool about not having your shit together. You cant go through life as a passenger. At some point, you must take over the wheel and decide where youre going next. Thats the difference between people who have an active mindset and people with a passive mindset. The former owns his destiny. The latter leaves it up to others.Step 2 Commit to learningThe Stoic philosopher Seneca put it best inOn The Shortness Of LifeIf you apply yourself to study you will avoid all boredom with life, you will not long for night because you are sick of daylight, you will be neither a burden to yourself nor useless to others, you will attract many to become your friends and the finest people will flock about you.Thats why I believe an active mindset has nothing to do with experience. I know interns who are more curious and ask more questions than most senior managers. But having an active mindset has nothing to do with age or experience. For example, an insurance consultant in his sixties - who I work with - is as curious as an intern. Hes enthusiastic about everything you talk to him about. The other day I visited a printing company with my brother. The owner, a third-generation business owner, took over the business from his father years ago. He gave us a full tour and showed us the old printing presses they used, etc.My brother and I were genuinely interested. The printing press, developed by Johannes Gutenberg, is the greatest invention for human progress. Without books, we wouldnt be where we are today. Thats fascinating to me.The owner said, Ive never met anyone who actually asked abouthowwe print our books, magazines, flyers, etc.Not many people commit to learning. Thats why so many people are always bored. That shouldnt be a surprise to you by now.Step 3 Add valueIf you apply step 2, adding value becomes easy. When youre curious and ask questions, you learn. And when you learn, you will have more knowledge and ideas. When you have ideas, you can use them to improve your life, work, business, etc. Thats the logic. But that doesnt mean you should blatantly share your ideas and advice with e veryone. You know why?Just because you have a good idea or piece of advice, it doesnt mean you must tell the other person about it. People get offended quickly. The reasons is that advice can be perceived as criticism.Dale Carnegie writes about it exhaustively inHow To Win Friends And Influence People. You must be subtle when you try to add value. Carnegie saysDont criticize, condemn, or complainGive honest and sincere appreciationArouse in the other person an eager want- Its much better to let people realize something by themselves instead of trying to force them.Sometimes people email me and say that I need to change something about my blog. Your articles are too long Someone recently said. He clearly never read Carnegie. When it comes to adopting an active mindset more knowledge will not help you - only action will. People with a passive mindset think thats common sense. Theyre quick to think they already know things. But as you and I both know its not about what you know, its about what you do.The most important thing is that we commit to learning. If you stay assertive and try to help people (who want to be helped) in life and business, youll never be bored. Plus, youll keep making progress. And making progress (no matter how little) is the sure sign that you have an active mindset.Thisarticlefirst appeared onDarius Foroux.
